The 25-year-old, from Scorton near Garstang, established William Firth Woodcraft in November and has seen the new business go from strength to strength.

He jumped at the chance to take the mantle of his grandfather's lathe and start his own business.

Mr Firth has designed and created chopping boards, pen holders and serving boards as well as furniture.

He said: “I’ve always been into it really, woodworking has always been something of a hobby of mine, I’ve grown up around it and my main inspiration was my grandad, who used to do a lot of woodturning in his day making bowls on a lathe.

“I’d seen that when I was little and I knew that I’d love to do that and he said I could use his lathe last year, so I jumped at the chance and thought that when the opportunity came up to do it as a full time job I didn’t look back.

“I’ve always done stuff with my grandad or my dad, it’s almost hereditary I suppose, so I wanted to seize the opportunity and embrace it.”

The business made its debut at Christmas markets and is now showing its wares at the gallery and arts and crafts shop, Arteria, in Brock Street, Lancaster.

Mr Firth, said: “We did the Lancaster Brewery Christmas market, which went really well and was the first one we’d done so we didn’t know what to expect but we got loads of positive feedback.

“The weekend after we did the Kirkby Lonsdale market and we sold everything so I couldn’t complain about that and we’ve had a launch at Lancaster Brewery too, which has seen some orders come through

“We’ve been in touch with quite a few shops recently and there are quite a few exciting prospects coming on as people get over the Christmas lull and Arteria are hosting an exhibition on January 13 for four months where we’ll have 12 products on show.”
