Retail giant Marks and Spencer have said they want to "strengthen their offer" in Morecambe.

The company does not have a store in the town and rumours are circulating that it could be about to arrive.
These have not been confirmed by the store though.

But Andrew Duncan, the director of developer Opus North, has said the chain should be a key part of its new retail park on the site of the former Frontierland theme park, on Marine Drive.

A spokeswoman for M&S: “We are always looking for new store locations and have an interest in strengthening our offer in the Morecambe area, however we have no further details to confirm at the moment.”

The new development on Marine Drive is part of a bigger scheme to help regenerate the town.

Headed by Opus North, the new development will see the installation of a new shopping area on former site of the Frontierland theme park.

The theme park closed in 2000.

One of the tourist attraction’s former rides ‘The Polo Tower’ has remained standing but not operating since then.

Mr Duncan said: “This is part of The Bay retail park.

“It is part of a bigger scheme to help redevelop Morecambe town.”

“The addition of Marks and Spencer is subject to leases but could be signed within the coming days.”

The construction project, due to be finished by the end of the decade, will see the addition of 100,000 sq ft complex with fashion outlets, a hotel, restaurants and family pub with 376 parking spaces.

A spokesman from Opus North said: “We are very grateful to the community for the patience it has shown and hope that the progress being made provides reassurance that Opus remains committed to delivering a quality retail development in Morecambe.”
